Update on star07
If you haven't heard, STAR07 will be held in Asheville North Carolina, June 24-27, 2007.
Beth and I visited Asheville in May for an organizational and planning meeting. We will be doing the registration
for STAR07. For the first time, registrants will be able to book their hotel rooms using the STAR registration form.
We stayed at the headquarters hotel, the Crowne Plaza Resort in Asheville. The hotel is a bit isolated, but very
nice. If you plan on attending you will be in the middle of some of the best riding in the east. The Blue Ridge
Parkway skirts the city of Asheville. Besides North Carolina, day rides can include Tennesseee, South Carolina and
northern Georgia.
The local HSTAers have promised to reveal all of their secret roads to us - including a bunch of cool dual sport
roads. Beth and I will be leaving early to check out all the best roads between Colorado and the east.
Membership
If you have a copy of the 2006 Blue Book, you will see that Colorado shows 29 families and 34 members. If you
check our Yahoo Groups membership
(http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/co-hsta) you will
see that there are 227 members. Some of the Yahoo Group members are web only, so they don't get regular email or
email digests, so probably not very active. Surprisingly, about 1/2 of our Blue Book members are not Yahoo Group
members. We have counted on the Yahoo Group as our main communication medium for years. Ad-hoc rides, scheduled
events, etc. are posted via the Yahoo Groups. We are hoping that publication of this newsletter will help to
involve those Colorado HSTAers who do not subscribe to the Yahoo Groups.
Web Site
Thanks to Carl Schelin for getting our web site back in order. We have a new URL: www.coloradohsta.org. Not sure
if we will reclaim the .com suffix. Fortunatley, Ken Kralick, our last webmaster, had a copy of the site that we
were able to re-install on a new server. If anyone has ideas that they would like to see on the CO-HSTA web site,
let Carl know.
Save the date
We are tentatively going to Gunnison for a weekend ride on September 22-24. Save the date - still tentative - but
looks pretty good. Our last Gunnison trip was a blast. We will stay at the Best Western. They have an attached
restaurant which means we can all stagger to our rooms after dinner - and last trips dinner produced a lot of
staggering (as well as a lot of laughs).
Looking for a ride leader
We don't have any rides set up for August yet and are looking for someone to set up an lead a ride. Last years
Great Northern ride was well attended, so it would be fair to set up something down south. I know that most of
you Springs riders were looking at a couple of hours each way - just to get to the ride starting point.
National event?
We are thinking of starting an annual 'official' HSTA event in Colorado next year. The Christie Lodge is very
amenable to providing us with a headquarters. We have done a lot of work already in setting up street and Dual
Sport rides centering on the Christie, so it may be a natural. If you have any ideas, shoot me an email. The
main difference between an 'official' event and our 'normal' events is that we would have AMA insurance and you
would have to be a member to attend. The event would be advertised in the Stareview and would encourage attendance
by the whole HSTA membership.
